Usted is also used in formal occasions, specially when we are speaking to older persons or one in a higher hierarchy than ours (Job wise) maybe even someone whom we are not acquainted with yet. And if not we can use the word tu.
The word American is mostly used for US Citizens but some people might tell you that as it all America (North, South and Center).
